The Skin Genie is a professional facial, skin, and laser clinic based in Carlisle, offering in-clinic treatments alongside an online shop and digital consultation service.
The Skin Genie originally operated on a WordPress website using WooCommerce. As the business grew, managing products, orders, and third-party integrations became increasingly complex and time-consuming. The client wanted to move to Shopify for a more reliable, scalable e-commerce platform with simpler day-to-day management and stronger native integrations.
A key part of the brief was to recreate the existing website in Shopify, while maintaining the established look and feel to ensure brand consistency and familiarity for returning customers.
The Challenge
Outgrowing WordPress
The Skin Genie was operating on a WordPress website using WooCommerce. As the clinic expanded its services and online shop, managing products, orders, and integrations became increasingly complex and time-consuming.
Third-Party Data Issues
The site relied heavily on Timely for bookings and product management, but duplicated products and missing data caused ongoing errors, confusion, and unnecessary admin.
The site was a basic template indistinguishable from any other garage.
Prescription-Only Products
Several product ranges are prescription-only, requiring customers to complete a consultation before purchasing. The challenge was to keep these products visible for education and discovery, while preventing unauthorised checkout access.
Inconsistent Product Content
Outdated descriptions and low-quality imagery were affecting both customer trust and off-site performance, particularly within Google Merchant Centre.
Our first priority was to move the site from WooCommerce to Shopify, recreating the existing design and structure to preserve brand familiarity for returning customers while gaining a more reliable, scalable platform.

By migrating The Skin Genie to Shopify and rebuilding the platform with clean data, controlled purchasing, and improved content, we delivered a scalable e-commerce solution that supports both clinical compliance and commercial growth.
Through continued collaboration, including a fully approved Dermalogica brand-compliance project, the site now supports complex, regulated product ranges while maintaining strict brand standards, usability, and long term flexibility.
Brand Compliance & Advanced Merchandising: Dermalogica
As an authorised Dermalogica stockist, The Skin Genie is required to ensure that all Dermalogica pages, collections, and products are fully aligned with the brand’s strict guidelines.
Direct Brand Collaboration & Approval
Throughout the project, we worked closely with the Dermalogica UK Internet Team, collaborating directly on all Dermalogica-related pages, collections, and products.
Each stage of the work was reviewed by the Dermalogica team, who provided detailed feedback, including extensive written guidance and annotated screenshots outlining specific required changes.
All updates were implemented and approved step-by-step, ensuring full compliance with Dermalogica’s brand, content, and presentation standards.
Complete Catalogue Restructure
We fully restructured the Dermalogica product range, creating multiple new sub-collections and rebuilding the underlying product architecture to support accurate organisation and future scalability.
Metadata, Tagging & Filtering
A bespoke metafield and tagging system was introduced to organise products by range, concern, and category. Individual collection pages were created for each Dermalogica product range, with metadata enabling quick, consistent updates across large product groups. Advanced filtering was added to improve product discovery and usability.
Brand-Accurate Content
All Dermalogica product descriptions, range descriptions, and supporting content were rewritten to meet brand standards while remaining clear, informative, and SEO-conscious.
Optimised Imagery & SEO
Product imagery was updated across the range, with files correctly named and alt-tagged to support accessibility, SEO, and Google Merchant performance.
Enhanced Product Pages
We introduced a structured accordion layout for key product information, including benefits, how to use, and ingredients. This improved clarity for customers while keeping pages clean and easy to navigate.
Visual Brand Consistency
Custom Dermalogica product icons were added across relevant pages, and the official Dermalogica font was implemented exclusively on Dermalogica pages and collections, ensuring complete brand continuity without affecting the wider site design.
This work ensured full Dermalogica compliance while significantly improving internal product management, customer experience, and long-term scalability.
